Allergies
Many skin allergies often go for years without diagnosis, and are later diagnosed by the location of the rash. “Allergen” is the substance that causes an allergic reaction.

Common skin allergens include:
- Nickel
- Rubber
- Dyes
- Neomycin
- Chromates
- Preservatives
- Fragrances
- Poison Ivy and related plants.
Dermacare Center offers a full spectrum of patch testing to determine what our patients are allergic to. Small amounts of the possible allergens are applied to the skin on strips of tapes and then removed after 2 days. An allergy shows up as a small red spot at the site of the patch.
People with allergic reactions should:
- Avoid the allergen that causes the reaction and chemicals that cross-react with it. Your dermatologist can help you identify items to avoid.
- Substitute products that do not cause reactions. Your dermatologist can suggest sources for these products.

Food Intolerance

A true food allergy causes an immune system reaction that affects numerous organs in the body. It can cause a range of symptoms. In some cases, an allergic food reaction can be severe or life-threatening.
In contrast, food intolerance symptoms are generally less serious and often limited to digestive problems. If you have a food intolerance, you may be able to eat small amounts of the offending food without trouble. You may also be able to prevent a reaction. Food Intolerance can also affect the immune system and in the long run can subject you to severe migraines, disturbed bowel movements and many other skin and respiratory conditions
